‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s road from gurney to success with Athletic
Whenhe initial occasion the Athletic striker competed in the UK, an young playing for the reserve team against Bundesliga youth at Adams Park in fall 2015, he scored. On his next visit he played in the country, against the Black Cats following that, he converted. His third outing, against Pep Guardiola’s team six weeks after that, sure enough, he repeated the feat. When he returned to the city to take on Manchester United at Leigh Sports Village in 2017, he did it once more. It was a superb volley, also. “Truly,” he remarks, “it ranks among my finest in my career.” Therefore the team did their duty: they took him off.
“I got well angry,” the attacker says, and then he starts laughing. “Probably there’s a recording. We went to play United and I was pretty good. They didn’t let me play the latter period: my contract wasn’t finalized deal, goals were flowing, many stories circulated, as you’d expect. No confirmation on Newcastle being interested, but I recall seeing about the Red Devils, the typical thing. It’s unclear the validity, but supposing an offer came, I would have wanted to stay at the club. It’s a privilege.”

At the facility, the city, the day’s first practice is ready to commence; following that, the brief trip to Loiu and a further journey to Britain, this time to play Newcastle in the Champions League on the upcoming match. Just saying those two words brings a smile to his face. It’s turning out to be a challenging campaign for the club, partially owing to the requirements of being here. Defeated late on in the weekend clash, they have secured just a single victory of their past eight league games and been defeated by Arsenal and the German side in the continental stage. Yet, consider the broader view, the memorable evenings and upcoming events, and a sense of thankful reflection about him.
In the three years since he had rejoined the team, Gorka has been a semi-final participant, denied at the last hurdle the showpiece event by the English giants, and has boarded a decades-old barge through the waterway surrounded by a million fans after securing the Spanish cup, the first title in a long wait. Now he is Athletic’s top scorer in the European competition, where they are distinctive and returning after absence in a decade. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he says.
The player believed it challenging enough just to break into the senior squad and that proved true. Born to the one-time rival player the former professional and a regular attendee at the opposition side, Gorka is a product of Antiguoko, the San Sebastián club that developed Mikel Arteta, Xabi Alonso and the Bournemouth manager. His move to Athletic came at seventeen but after his first-team bow in August 2018, he suffered a torn cruciate, dropped, a relegation and a return before he could earn his place, returning at 26 to live the best days of the club’s history.
“Joining the setup doubting you’ll make the top level but each step you progress through you’re remaining and you can observe the approach. You get there but … departure is necessary.” He had limited game time in a handful of matches between his debut and February 2019. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games at that level and my knee gave way.
“A severe disappointment but I look back on it as a beneficial experience because it shifted the perspective. Recovering from a long-term injury is difficult, but it’s beneficial. You adopt practices previously lacking. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I attended practice and then head home, as a youngster does. In the facility, you have everything, so do everything. Work, precaution. Strength training. If your hips aren’t balanced, work on that. If your ankles are a 10, improve it more. All the minor details: perform them.
“In the first team you’re going to face physical challenges who have experienced contact countless occasions. Highly robust. Seeing previous pictures: my physique was slight. So what happens, happens. Present-day images and it’s totally different. Recovery revealed that. Practice concludes, but there’s more to do. Everyone else is ready, really ready; you have to be too.”
Game time is essential. The striker moved emotionally in the pandemic season, aged 23, joining the second tier. During his Sabadell spell in that season, he scored three times in forty appearances. With Amorebieta in the second half of 2021-22, the he found his form. “Players go through it: transfers, releases. If you turn it round, work, believe, and should the time come the requirement appears for your role, they might come back for you. Preparation is key. Upon the recall, a fantasy realized. The trophy success, play in Europe, and make the UCL … pfff.”
No wonder he says savor the moment. All the more so after the previous season which, sometimes, was about endurance. From top scorer with a high tally, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
