At least 64 people died in a police operation targeting the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the biggest and most lethal operation in the Brazilian state's records.

Four police officers were included in the fatalities during Operation Containment in the Alemão and Penha districts, government representatives reported. In excess of 80 individuals were arrested.

Violent conflicts broke out when around 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on Tuesday early hours. The Comando Vermelho countered with gunfire, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, police representatives said.

The United Nations human rights body expressed being "appalled" by the law enforcement raid, urging "prompt and effective investigations".

Operation Impact

The slum neighborhoods close to the aerial transportation hub is considered to be the central command of a major organised crime groups.

Local authorities confirmed at least 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Dozens of people were injured, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Community Response

Locals have likened the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 residents - to a "war zone" since the mission commenced.

The Comando Vermelho organization has been increasing their territory across the Rio state, increasing drug trafficking routes and dominance over the slum communities.
